Risks Associated with the “Paracetamol Challenge”

There has been increasing circulation on social media of a phenomenon known as the “paracetamol challenge”, which encourages young people to deliberately ingest high doses of this medication, often in a competitive context. This practice poses a serious risk to health and requires a clear response in terms of awareness and prevention.

Paracetamol is widely used in the treatment of pain and fever and has a favourable safety profile when administered in accordance with recommended doses. However, inappropriate use or consumption in quantities exceeding those indicated can have severe consequences.

Paracetamol overdose is one of the leading causes of acute liver injury worldwide. Excessive ingestion can cause serious and irreversible liver damage, which, in the most critical cases, may progress to acute liver failure, the need for liver transplantation and risk of death. In less frequent situations, renal complications may also occur, particularly when there is prolonged use above therapeutic doses.

One of the most concerning aspects of this type of poisoning is the initial absence of significant symptoms. During the first few hours, and sometimes on the first day, the individual may present only non-specific signs such as nausea, vomiting, malaise or drowsiness. This apparent stability may delay seeking medical care, allowing liver damage to progress silently.

In the event of any suspected excessive ingestion of paracetamol, it is essential to seek immediate medical assessment, even in the absence of symptoms. Treatment is significantly more effective when initiated early.

In this context, Grupo HPA Saúde reinforces the importance of health literacy among children, adolescents and families. The use of medicines should always be responsible, informed and guided by healthcare professionals. Prevention, education and active vigilance are essential to avoid situations associated with risk behaviours promoted in digital environments.
